Living in Massachusetts means never getting complacent when it comes to the weather. While we can see spring on the horizon, we may also get hit with a blizzard before it arrives. This is why it’s always important to be prepared, and our Mazda service center has some tips that will help you deal with a car stuck in the snow.
Start By Clearing as Much as Possible
The first thing to do is to get rid of as much snow around your tires as possible. You also need to clear out any snow that has gotten higher than your car’s bumper.
Turn Off Traction Control
Once you’ve removed as much snow as you can, get in your car and turn off traction control. While important when roads are slippery, this feature will actually hurt your efforts to get out of a snowy situation. When your car is extricated, just remember to turn it back on.
Rock the Car Back and Forth
In order to get your car moving, you need to create momentum, and you can do this by alternating between putting your car in drive and reverse. Move it in both directions as much as you can, but try to do it gradually and steadily without slamming on the pedals.
Try Some Traction Tools
If the rocking doesn’t get your car out, it’s time to take out the traction tools you hopefully have in your car. Rock salt, dirt, and cat litter can all be very effective. Whatever you have, put it under all four tires and then try rocking again. This should help you get your car out by providing something for the tires to grip.
One thing you can do to help yourself in winter weather is to make sure your tires have deep enough treads. If your car needs new tires, you can get them from Patrick Mazda. Contact our service center to make an appointment today.
