This is the time of year when it really pays to be prepared with your car, especially when it comes to your battery, as freezing temperatures can wreak havoc on it. The Mazda service center at Patrick Mazda offers these tips if you ever need to jump-start it.
Plan in Advance
The worst thing that can happen if your battery dies is to be unprepared. This is why it’s vital to always have jumper cables in your trunk. As long as you have these — and access to a working car — you are good to go.
How to Get Your Car Jump-Started
Jump-starting your car battery is relatively easy. First, you need to have the working car parked nose-to-nose, close enough to easily reach the non-working car. Connect the red end of the jumper cable to the positive terminal on the dead battery. This is indicated by “POS” or a plus sign. Connect the other end to the same terminal on the good battery.
Next, attach the black end to the negative terminal (“NEG” or minus sign) on the working battery. Finally, instead of connecting the other black end to the other negative terminal, attach it to an unpainted surface like the hood strut.
Start the Car
When the cables are hooked up properly, start the car with the working battery. After letting it run for several minutes, try to start the car with the dead battery. If it fires up, be sure to drive around for at least 15 minutes to charge up the battery. If it doesn’t start, check to make sure that the cables are connected as they should be, give it a couple more minutes and try again. If it still won’t start, contact roadside assistance and have your car towed directly to our Mazda service center.
